This distance learning A Level History course has been designed to the latest specifications. The first available exam dates for this version of the Pearson Edexcel History A Level are in June 2017.

As you progress through this engaging and interesting home study course you will have 24 hour access to your own specialist tutor via email. They will guide you through interesting and complex topics such as Soviet revolutionary history and British Parliamentary reform in a way that is accessible to students with little or no prior knowledge of the subject.

An A Level in History is a great platform for those wishing to move on to higher education, but could be equally useful for those wising to bolster their CV, or simply learn something new.

The aims and objectives of the Pearson Edexcel A Level in History are to enable students to:
  • Develop their interest in and enthusiasm for history and an understanding of its intrinsic value and significance
  • Acquire an understanding of different identities within society and an appreciation of aspects such as social, cultural, religious and ethnic diversity, as appropriate
  • Build on their understanding of the past through experiencing a broad and balanced course of study
  • Improve as effective and independent learners, and as critical and reflective thinkers with curious and enquiring minds
  • Develop the ability to ask relevant and significant questions about the past and to research them
  • Acquire an understanding of the nature of historical study, for example that history is concerned with judgements based on available evidence and that historical judgements are provisional
  • Develop their use and understanding of historical terms, concepts and skills
  • Make links and draw comparisons within and/or across different periods and aspects of the past
  • Organise and communicate their historical knowledge and understanding in different ways, arguing a case and reaching substantiated judgements.

This course is divided into four units:
  • Unit 1: Russia 1917-1991: From Lenin to Yeltsin
  • Unit 2: Mao’s China 1949-1976
  • Unit 3: Protest, Agitation and Parliamentry Reform in Britain 1780-1928
  • Unit 4: The Cold War, its Development and its Demise 1945-1990

In order to recieve your Pearson Edexcel A Level in History (Specification: 9HI0), you will be required to sit three written examinations, and submit one piece of coursework. It is the responsibility of the student to find a centre and book their exams as a private candidate. All exam fees are payable directly to the centre, not to UKDLP. We will provide you with a list of recommended centres around the country when you enroll. When you book your exams you may be asked to provide exam codes. These are listed below, and will be sent to you on enrollment with UKDLP.

Paper One: Breadth study with Interpretations-Russia 1917-1991: From Lenin to Yeltsin (Code: 1E)

  • Section A: One essay from a choice of two
  • Section B: One essay from a choice of two
  • Section C: One compulsory essay (source-based interpretations)
  • 1 hour 30 minutes in total. (*30% of total for A Level qualification)

Paper Two: Depth study - Mao's China 1949-1976 (Code: 2E.1)

  • Section A: Question based on two pieces of source information provided. No choice (compulsory)
  • Section B: One essay from a choice of two.
  • 1 hour 30 minutes in total. (*20% of total for A Level qualification)

Paper Three: Themes in breadth, with aspects in depth - Protest, agitation and parliamentary reform in Britain 1780-1928 (Code: 36.1)

  • Section A: Two-part question based on two pieces of source information provided. No choice (compulsory)
  • Section B: Depth essay- one essay from a choice of two.
  • Section C: Breadth essay (*targeting long-term change over 100 years)- one essay from a choice of two.
  • 2 hours 15 minutes in total. (*30% of total for A Level qualification)

Coursework option: The Cold War, its development and its demise (1945-90) (Code: 04)

Coursework requirements: Produce a detailed essay of approximately 3-4,000 words on the subject matter above, with suggested questions provided. Students can break this into sections or write it as one continuous extended essay.
(*20% of total for A Level qualification)

Paper Based Version
  • The course comes to you as a paper-based pack delivered by courier.
  • You will be given guidance through the Study Guide on the nuts and bolts of studying and submitting assignments.
  • Postal assignments cannot be accepted without prior permission from the tutor.

The course contains a number of assignments which your tutor will mark and give you valuable feedback on. We call these Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). You need only send the TMAs to your tutor for comment, not the self-assessment exercises which are also part of the course to help you gauge your progress.

You will have access to a tutor, via email, who will mark your work and guide you through the course to help you prepare for your examinations. In addition, you will be supplied with a comprehensive Study Guide which will help you through the study and assessment process.
