The Personal Nutrition Online Course contains the following units of study:
Lesson 1: What Is Nutrition?
This introduction covers the basics of how we define nutrition and how we can apply this awareness to ensure we maintain a healthy diet. Everything we discuss is backed up with academic evidence and research which allows us to finally answer the big question: why is nutrition so important? We then turn the tables and look into malnutrition, which also includes over nutrition, which we so often forget can lead to Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and Heart Disease. This first lesson aims to give a broad overview of how we define nutrition and why it is crucially important to us.
Lesson 2: Food Composition- The Essential Nutrients
Now you have established a healthy foundational knowledge of nutrition we can get down to what it encompasses. What are the essential nutrients to a healthy diet? What do these nutrients do in the human body? We introduce macro and micro nutrients, more familiarly known as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals and begin to explore their scientific complexity. We bring these aspects of nutrition back to the basics, making them easy to understand so that you can build on this knowledge in later lessons.
We also delve into the Glycaemic index and low GI diets. We look at the importance of a high fibre diet and how fibre lends itself to weight management and good digestion.
Lesson 3: Healthy Eating Guidelines
Learn to understand nutritional guidelines from across the world, and begin to form ideas of how these guidelines can be implemented into your own or someone else’s diet. We are all familiar with the food pyramid, so let’s further look at different food groups and their role in a healthy and well balanced diet.
We discuss food portions, sugar levels, as well as high fat and sugary foods that you need to be wary of. By the end of lesson three you will have the ability to differentiate the food groups and decide how much of each food group be incorporated into your diet..
Lesson 4: Weight Loss and Fad Diets
After lesson three, you are familiar with what your body needs to function and be healthy. Now let’s look at what you’re currently eating. This lesson introduces calorie counting in relation to your output of energy. Calorie counting can be a useful tool when you have a health maintenance or weight loss plan and is crucial in achieving those goals. We introduce some diet plans to make it simple for you if you set up personal goals, or goals for someone else.
Lesson 5: Behavioural Change and SMART Goals (on demand)
We don’t all eat only when we are hungry, or when our bodies actually need food. This lesson lets you discover the factors in eating behaviours and looks at cognitive behavioural change so that we can change these habits and establish and maintain new healthy eating habits. We also cover SMART goals so that when you set your goals, they are realistic, and thus achievable.
Lesson 6: Eating to Optimise your Energy
This lesson is one of the most valuable in the course. By studying this comprehensive overview of how to eat for energy you will improve your quality of life and help you achieve weight loss or gain goals in no time through the use of superfoods and good energy intake techniques.
Lesson 7: Diet, Exercise and Sports Nutrition
Why exactly is exercise so important in being health? We are not all athletes, but even a small amount of physical activity can have such a positive impact on our health, that there’s no doubt you will be motivated to make exercise in any shape or form part of your life.
This lesson will give you a comprehensive understanding of how exercise effects your weight and health. You will also learn about different types of exercise and see that different exercises burn different amounts of calories and affect our bodies differently too. This lesson is informative and practical allowing you to put your newly gained knowledge to the test.
Lesson 8: Understanding Food labelling and Nutritional Claims (on demand)
This comprehensive lesson dives deep into understanding food labels and how they can communicate to you the benefits and risks in consuming different foods. By gaining a good understanding of common food labelling practices you'll be on the road to eating smarter and healthier in no time.
Lesson 9: The Secret to Weight Loss- Anthropometric Measurements
This practical lesson will teach you how to identify your current health situation or that of others and will allow you to make informed decisions relevant to your current health status. We will also cover BMR and how to calculate the correct calories you should consume based on a set of key identifiers.
Lesson 10: Fast Food and Special Diets
This final lesson will reinforce your understanding of the course and teach you new tips and techniques to prepare better and healthier food. Through preparation you can save the wasted nutrients that are lost when typically cooking food and this lesson will show you how. We also cover special diets so that you can cook and cater for everybody, regardless of their diet.
