Learn how to speak, understand, read and write Japanese from scratch.This evening Japanese Beginners course runs over three terms that progressively build on one another. Lessons take place once a week on Tuesdays for two hours. Each term lasts 10 weeks. This course is an introduction to the Japanese language and way of life for the purpose of practical communication. Students develop essential listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Japanese. Students are introduced to Japanese characters (Hiragana, Katakana and very basic Kanji). Whether learning Japanese for travelling, working abroad or with foreign companies, the Japanese Beginners course enables students to communicate confidently on a basic level, socialise and not feel out of place when visiting the country.

LEVEL:Term 1 of the Japanese Year 1 course is aimed at complete Beginners - for students with no prior knowledge of the language.Term 2 and term 3 of this course is aimed at students with some basic knowledge of the language. If you would like to join the Japanese Year 1 course in January or April, please make sure you have the correct level by using our online guidelines.If you are a complete Beginner and you have missed the September enrolment, you can join the Japanese Accelerated course in January. You will cover Term 1 and Term 2 within one 10 week term. You will then be able to join Japanese Year 1 in Term 3.If you have missed the January enrolment, you can join the Japanese Beginners Summer Intensive (Year 1) in April. Sentences using 'to be'; various particles; word order; form of verbs according to positive & negative statement as well as in the future & past tense; interrogative nouns (nani,doko,itsu,dare); Hiragana

Grammatical structures

Modal verbs (Te form + mo iidesu ka); imperative (Nai form + de kudasai); present continuous (Te form  + imasu); verb 'want' + infinitive (Watashi wa verb-tai desu); very basic kanji

Teaching and Assessment

The emphasis in this course is on listening and speaking. The lessons focus on language that is required in authentic situations.

Classroom activities will include: role-playing, class room discussion, pair and group work, work on pronunciation and intonation as well as grammar in context. More comprehensive grammar exercises, practise in Japanese writing and reading texts are generally set as homework. All evaluation will take place in a relaxed and informal setting.
