Have you gained a basic everyday conversation level of French, or completed the French Year 1 Beginners or the French Accelerated course, yet do not feel ready to join the Lower Intermediate Year 2 course?Perhaps it’s French pronunciation that is still causing you trouble or you are looking to build your confidence in speaking in French or you feel French grammar is a mystery.If you feel that a longer exposure in the target language would be essential before making the jump to Year 2, then the French Beginners Plus short course is ideal for you.This short French course is taught in French and runs over three terms. The focus of the Beginners Plus French course is on improving your listening and speaking skills. Basic grammar and vocabulary will be revised.This enables students to gain confidence and ability in understanding and communicating on everyday topics with better fluency while broadening their knowledge of the French culture and way of life.If you missed the October enrolment and you already have some knowledge of French, you can join the French Beginners Plus course in Term 2 or 3 but you will need to have your level assessed. Travel; Describing places and journeys; Food and France overseas; Past, present and future events.

Basic pronunciation

Word endings; French vowels; Difficult sounds (‘u’, ‘tion’,’r’…), diphtongs (‘eu’, ‘on’, ‘ai’, ‘in’…); Nasal sounds (‘on’ ‘un’, ‘an’…); ‘s’ and ‘ss’ and ‘z’.

Grammatical structures

Consolidation of the present, Complete revision the past tense (Perfect) and future tense; Relative clauses: 'Une ville qui est en Alsace / Une ville que j'aime'; Complete review of all partitives and prepositions (du, de la, des; au, à la, aux…); introduction to direct and indirect pronouns (him, her, them; to his, to her, to them); Introduction to 'y', ‘j'y retrournerai’.

Difficult sounds (‘j’, ‘ge/gu’,’ç’, ‘p +consonant’…); Stem-changing verbs; Clusters with ‘L’; ‘La liaison’; Silent ‘h’; Differentiating ‘é’ and ‘è’, ‘ou’ and ‘u’.

Grammatical structures

Consolidation of adjectives, superlatives and comparatives; Adverbs; Relative clauses (ce que, ce qui); Revision of the Imperative; Consolidation of negatives (ne…plus/jamais/rien…); pronouns 'y' and ‘en’ ‘j’en voudrais deux, merci’, j’y vais demain’; Interrogative sentences.

Teaching and Assessment

The emphasis of this French Beginners Plus (Year 1) course is on listening and speaking. The lessons focus on language that is required in authentic situations.

Classroom activities will include: role-playing, class room discussion, pair and group work, work on pronunciation and intonation as well as grammar in context. Listening to audio clips and watching videos are an important element in our lessons. More comprehensive grammar exercises and reading texts are generally set as homework.
